Are witches always the evil ones?
From the likes of Rara Jonggrang and Calon Arang, the accusations against these characters in Javanesemythologies have always been unsettling. They were deemed deserving to fall from grace due to their supposed sins. However, what actually were these sins they are accused of? Were these characters truly guilty, or were they forced take the wrongful blame upon themselves?
Sirap Wadon is birthed from a desire to deconstruct female representation in these mythologies.
Women, and ultimately witches, are source of both fascination and terror—personification of life-giving power and “magic” that are unfathomable to men which therefore, has to be conquered. The sins these characters imprinted upon are only because they challenged patriarchy.
Sirap Wadon tries to build a new mythos to reclaim the “magic” a woman bear as their empowering force. Femininity is a woman’s magic—sirap wadon—from which these witches gain power.
These witches were heroes. Now they fight back.
